Baked Pie Company, located on Long Shoals Rd., was recently opened by an alumna’s mother.
According to the owner Kirsten Fuchs, it all started last summer.
“My daughter and I were driving around South Asheville looking for a place to get a slice of pie and a cup of coffee. We were not able to find a place, which then gave me the idea,” Fuchs said.
Fuchs said that the decision to serve desserts and pies just spoke to her heart, and so she began to put the idea in motion.
Fuchs’s big idea was to bake around 90 to 95 pies every morning. With the help of her sister-in-law, she decided on the name ‘Baked Pie Company.’
“I sort of put the word out to my friends and family to come up with a good name and my sister in law came up with the name Baked. It really fits the Asheville vibe and that is what we do, we bake pies every morning,” Fuchs said.
Baked offers different flavors of pie every day. However, they offer some consistent flavors that are their most popular, such as their honey pecan pie. They also offer both warm and cold pies.
“My favorite pie is the honey pecan, and I am loving the Atlantic Beach pie as well,” Fuchs said.
Fuchs admitted that it can be a little overwhelming to see all of the delicious pies in the displays, not knowing which kind to get. To help with the decisions, they offer an option of a pie flight, which is three smaller slices of pie with a scoop of ice cream. They also offer options of buying one single slice or a whole pie.
Fuchs’s sister-in-law Heidi Cole is now working at Baked as well.
“Everything is homemade from scratch and has a bunch of love. The ambiance is just fantastic. I guess that fits in with all of Asheville, but I think we are the only ones who make pies,” Cole said.
The costs of their pie options range from $5.49 to $32 with a portion of the cost being the experience of eating in a warm, cozy environment. The shop is decorated with numerous antiques and a couch and several chairs to sit in. It also offers a kids’ station, as well as little stuffed animals lying around.
Fuchs had always dreamed of owning a store in North Carolina when she was in high school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She never thought that this dream would actually come true, but now, she has been able to combine her childhood dream with her love of pie.
“When I was in high school, I remember talking to a friend of mine, and I said one day I am going to open a general store in North Carolina. That was my dream in high school. So, this with the antiques and the pies as well as everything else is sort of reminiscent of what I thought,” Fuchs said.
Senior Cameron Jansen enjoyed a pie flight after a long and hard AP test.
“I really like the setting, and I think it is kinda cute as well as aesthetically pleasing. All of the different options and flavors stood out to me and made it to where we could not just choose one flavor,” Jansen said.
