Paris is just an amazing city with great food. One food they are particularly known for is their light and flakey croissants. So, this week I am going to talk about how you can get or make croissants right here in Asheville, NC.
When my family was in Paris, we stayed at a pretty small but very cute hotel in the city. They provided breakfast every morning, and they had tons of croissants each day. They were so good with all of the thin layers encrusted in that golden brown outside. Since we were in Paris, I decided to as the Parisians do and that was to eat croissants and fruit for breakfast every morning. There are so many ways you can eat croissants, everything from spreading jelly on them to using them for sandwich bread to putting them in bread pudding, or just eating them plain. Croissants are not just popular in Paris but all of France. In the United States, we sometimes sell croissants with fillings such as chocolate or fruit, but in France they sell/ make their croissants plain.
However, there are many ways to get croissants right here in Asheville, NC. One way is that you can buy them pre-made in your local grocery store. I know that Ingles sells croissants in their bakery section. They have big croissants and small croissants (both are great for sandwiches!) Another way to get croissants right at your home is to buy the Pillsbury crescent rolls. Even though they are not called croissants, they are pretty much the same thing. All you have to do with the crescent rolls is put them in the oven and let them bake. With these you can make many different recipes. One of my favorite recipes is pigs in a blanket.
The third and final way that you can get croissants right here in Asheville is to make your own croissants from scratch. Some of the ingredients that you will need are yeast, water, white sugar, all-purpose flour, salt, milk, vegetable oil, butter, and an egg. There are many recipes out there and if you look up croissant recipes you will be able to chose the one that you want. The one that I am looking at says to combine your yeast, water, and one teaspoon of sugar. Then combine your warm milk with sugar, salt, then add the yeast and oil. You then mix the ingredients together well, then knead until smooth. Once smooth, let it rise or triple in volume, then let it deflate. Then let it rise again until double the size, then you can let it deflate and chill for 20 minutes. You will then follow your instructions to lay out and cut your dough to bake and roll your croissants.
I hope you are able to use these tips so that you can have a little bit of Paris right in your humble abode.
