Interview with: Senior Diana Childress by: Amy Webster
We know a lot about where we live and what is right around us, but what we do not know about are the places and things that are far away. A solution to this is to travel and see the places that we are not normally around. Traveling is something that I thoroughly enjoy. It is also something that Diana Childress and I have in common.
In 2015 Diana visited Greece with her best friend Browyn Player. One day they rented four wheelers and went adventuring in Naxos, Greece. They ended up in a place where there was a man motioning to Childress to turn around. As she was doing so, the man ran up in front of the four wheeler and she accidentally ran over his foot. “I am so sorry, I am so sorry” said Childress. Then the toothless man from Greece “gave me a big smooch right on the lips” Childress said. Childress left this area as fast as she could. The reason she went four wheeling was to see Greece in a different way. “When I travel I always try to spend as much time with the natives so I can immerse myself in the culture” said Childress. This is a big part in traveling because without getting into the culture, it is easier to understand the meaning behind the culture. While trying to immerse yourself into culture you are always going to run into adventure but that is the point where you have to choose to accept the adventure or not.
Later on that day, Childress was touring the streets on her way back to her hotel. Childress stopped at a produce stand where there was an older native man, named Demetri, selling produce. Diana stopped and talked to Demetri for a couple of hours. During the time Childress was in Greece, Greece was in an economic downfall. The downfall was the majority of the conversation between Childress and Demitri. The conversation helped Childress understand the culture and the local news in Greece. At the end of their conversation Childress bought some figs and oranges at a fairly high price. As she was leaving the produce stand the man asked her where she was staying. She did not respond and she stood in shock as he said he would leave his wife and four kids for her. “You are not going to leave your wife and four kids for me” said Childress. This is again where Childress left as fast as possible.
For some people everyday's an adventure and for Childress that day was a big adventure. She explored Greece and got to know the culture of Naxos, Greece. Along the way she had interesting interactions with natives of Greece. These are all parts of a great adventure. You just have to be brave enough to put yourself out there and the adventures will come to you.
