STEM education is a curriculum based on the student focus in four specific disciplines of study: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. With this approach, teachers incorporate English and history into the other four subjects by reading about them or learning the history behind them.
While this system of education may not be for everyone, STEM education path is better for students who want to focus on the fields that fall under STEM. Math and science are very important to our education and our future world. Without math and science, we would not have the technology that we have today or the medical procedures and medicines that are available to us.
With the STEM approach, math, science, technology, and engineering are being highlighted more than they usually are. This form of education helps students who would like to follow a career that incorporates a large part of the STEM curriculum. Additionally, math and science are valued very highly in our modern society, shown by the fact that the two subjects are mandatory in all schools.
Buncombe County used this way of learning to create a new high school called the Nesbitt Discovery Academy. They advertise to high schoolers who want to pursue a career in a STEM-based field.
According to Nesbitt’s HR director Rodney Smith, the STEM facets apply to nearly any career. On top of that, the Discovery Academy teaches critical thinking and problem solving skills. With the approach, students are taught 21st Century skills for their future 21st Century jobs. The goal of the STEM school is to prepare students to enter professional fields in the STEM category.
Technology is becoming prevalent everywhere. Roberson is going fully 1:1 next year and now everything keeps going online. With technology popping up everywhere, people need to be more educated on how to use technology and STEM offers a great opportunity to do just that. Engineering does not fall under every occupation, but for some people, engineering is their career and is very interesting to them. STEM tries to uncover engineering for students so they can decide if engineering may be a possible career path of choice for them.
An alternate path of learning is focused on humanities, which includes English, language arts, and overall well-roundedness. I understand that writing and reading is essential for everything, but they are included in the STEM curriculum. Students who want to enter into any fields that fall into the STEM category should have the opportunity to specialize and learn more about the subjects and career fields that they would like to pursue. An example of the humanity approach would be a baseball player who is phenomenal at baseball but is required to play basketball in addition to baseball. STEM is an opportunity to become even more educated in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math to help students be more prepared for their future career and college experience.
