I don’t know about you, but whenever I need something sweet, cold, and delicious, I go for ice cream. However, in Italy, they would go for gelato.
Gelato is originally from Italy, but there is discussion on where exactly in Italy it originated.\ There are two main regions where gelato is tied including Dolomite, which is in the far north of Italy, and Sicily, which is in the far south. Even though gelato was made in both of these regions, they were made differently.
In Dolomite, they base their gelato with milk. To make gelato they used milk, cream, sugar, eggs, snow, and natural flavors. Gelato was considered to be a rich man’s dessert, and in early Italy, few people could afford it. During the summer when the Italians would have a lot of tourists, they would then go out and sell gelato. Since they made gelato using snow, they kept snow in their basements where it is very cold so they could sell it in the summer. Gelato can also be made with ice.
Then in Sicily they base their gelato with water. However, when it was based with water they then would call it sorbetto, which is also known as sorbet. They also used the technique of storing snow in their basements for the selling of gelato. As well as selling in their community, they would travel to surrounding countries like Austria, Switzerland, France, and Germany.
If you are anything like me, you are probably wondering where you can get some. An easy way to get some Gelato in Asheville is to go to your local grocery store like Ingles and go to the ice cream aisle. When you are in the aisle go to the far end where all of the small containers of ice cream are and look for a clear container that says Talenti. This is a pretty well know brand that produces gelato. They have all kinds flavors ranging from mint chocolate chip to wild blackberry.
I tried the wild blackberry and it was fruity, creamy, and sweet which will hit the spot if you are in the mood for something cold and sweet. This is something that I would definitely recommend and something that I will be having again.
