For this paper, I will be taking over Jamie’s column and will be talking about my opinion on the how the older generation is very important.
It’s that time of year where the seniors who we have all looked up to are getting ready to leave and juniors are stepping up to become the new seniors. This got me thinking about a different type of seniors that a lot of us call our grandparents.
Every night since I was very young, my family has eaten dinner with my grandmother, who has exposed me to a different perspective on things. My grandmother would always talk about how she grew up in Avery’s Creek where her grandfather made pottery. This became a family business where everyone was involved and had their own role.
Every once in a while, I would get curious and look through her old picture albums where I got to see pictures of her growing up. As I was looking through the album, I would ask my grandmother what was going on when the picture was taken. This then brought up a lot of stories from her childhood.
These stories exposed me to what seemed like a different culture and has helped me realize how important the older generation is. Even though it seemed like a completely different culture by the way she described it, she had to deal with a lot of the same things that we have to deal with today.
The older generation was able to take obstacles and overcome them. Even though they grew up in a pretty hard time when they did not have much, they made the most of it. They were even able to take their childhood memories and traditions and make them better for the upcoming generations as well as for their children.
With these memories, they were able to make a lot of lead way and made a huge impact.
The older generation was a pioneering generation that many people have looked up to. Some examples in our community are Joe Eblen who created Eblen charities, Eleanor Ponder who the English hall is named after, Dorothy Dunn who the guidance counseling office is named after, and many more.
Without this generation, our community would not be where it is today. They have taught our parents and have led the way for our generation as well as many more to come.
My eyes have been opened by their stories and their actions, and they have helped me to see the impact that one person can make when they put their heart into what they care about. Every person I named was able to make the impact that they did because they cared about what they were doing and the people that they were trying to help.
And it is likely that they don’t understand how big of an impact they have had on our parents’ generation and the entire community.
I honestly just hope that I can make at least half of the impact that they were able to make. So, thank you to everyone in that generation who has really cared and put the effort in. We are where we are because of them. I know that our 2017 seniors will work hard and have a great impact on our community as well.
