Senior, Evan Goosmann broke the school’s shutout record while playing North Buncombe High School on Monday, Sept. 19.
Goosmann broke alumni Patrick Brown, Matt Novchich, and Eric Handley’s record, who were all tied at 32 shutouts. To reach 33 shutouts and break the record has been Goosmann’s goal since his Junior year, when he realized it was possible. Goosmann’s teammates have supported him be able to obtain this goal since junior year, said Goosmann.
“I am very proud of Evan for what he has done in the past two years and I think it is really cool that he has broken the school record,”Junior Evan Lewis said.
The team is just as happy to be a part of a winning and record beating program as Goosmann is, Joshua Martin said.
“All of the teamates i have had have helped me reach this goal” Goosmann said.
Goosmann’s success was not just a success for Goosmann but a success for the team, Martin said. The Boys Soccer team is currently 10-3-1 and they are only half way through their season. This is another step taken by team. Having Goosmann, who is a solid player in the goal and on the field is a factor to the success, Junior Jack Sandstedt said.
“He is a pretty good leader and it is impressive that he has started on varsity since his sophomore year,” Lewis said.
Goosmann is not just a good player but is also a good student off the field...Goosmann is in line for great things, Martin said. Along with being a good student, Goosman is also a good friend and “I am just honored to know Evan,” Junior Carson Brock said. The soccer team still has half a season to go with Goosmann in the goal and is still counting the shut-outs. The achievements have been numerous and have been brought in by the entire team. It is always a team achievement, Martin said.
“Everyone loves him and we are all very happy for him,” Sandstedt said.
Reaching the record has taken Goosmann three years with Goosmann being on his third year as a starting varsity player. Goosmann works hard on the field, in the classroom, and is loved by his friends and teammates. They have nine games left until playoffs and are going in with thirteen wins under their belt.
“This is a lot of responsibility but is a great honor to be a part of such a great program,” said Martin.
There is still time left in the season to continue accumulating great results with the 2016 Boys soccer team.
“He is a great goalkeeper, works hard in training, focuses in the games and he has great teammates around him that allow him to be the back line of defense,” Joshua Martin said.
